GIS Mapping: An Invaluable Tool

A GIS helps answer questions and solve problems by looking at the data in a way that is quickly understood and easily shared. It therefore, helps in managing the variety of challenges in our world.

Geographic information systems or GIS has transformed the world of maps. GIS mapping is an invaluable tool for a wide range of industries, including mining, utilities, agriculture, petroleum, town planning and so on.

GIS Mapping involves creating digitized versions of maps, transferring hard copies of maps into a digital medium using a computer-aided design (CAD) program. GIS mapping companies can create a variety of maps this way, including contour maps, spatial maps, atlas maps, cadastral maps, thematic and zonal maps, landscape maps and environmental maps.

GIS mapping allows for the visualization of geographic data, analysis of spatial relationships, and efficient data management. GIS data conversions allow data from different sources to be merged in one common format, which allows for easy access, analysis and utilization.

GIS mapping also enables the creation of topographic maps and 3D topographic maps. Preparing digital 3D topographic maps involves raster to vector conversion of topographic maps using CAD-based software such as AutoCAD, Microstation etc. Different features of topographic maps -- contour lines, boundary lines, water areas, vegetation, forest areas etc -- are captured or digitized in different layers to generate the topographic map in vector format. 3D topographic mapping is done by assigning the Z-values to the contours to generate the 3D terrain model of the topography.

GIS mapping is very useful for a variety of industries. For example, utilities can keep track of water mains, data lines, telephone lines, power lines, gas mains, and sewer lines. Comprehensive mapping of underground infrastructure with geophysical technology leads to cost reductions and safety enhancements during the design and construction, and maintenance phases of a project. Softwares such as Smallworld, ArcGIS, MapInfo, etc. are used to enable such services with great ease.

GIS mapping can be created using different data sources to create a comprehensive picture of a certain situation. For instance, public health officials can find out how many doctors are there in a given area by combining information from maps and statistics on doctors.
